Hull City were relegated from the Premier League on the final day of the season after a 0-0 draw with Manchester United whilst Newcastle ensured their safety with a 2-0 win at home to West Ham United.

Steve Bruce’s Hull City side will be playing Championship football next season despite Manchester United going down to 10-men late in the game after Maroune Fellaini was sent off but the side from the Humber failed to take advantage and it was immaterial with Newcastle’s victory thanks to goals from Moussa Sissoko and fans favourite Jonas Gutierrez.

It has been a miserable season for Hull as off the field problems mounted with owner Assem Allam continuing his fight to change the name of the club to the Hull City Tigers despite opposition from the fans as well as the suspension of highly rated midfielder Jake Livermore after he failed a drugs test for cocaine.

Ultimately their failure on the pitch to score enough goals looks to have cost them their top-flight status and it remains to seen if manager Bruce will remain in charge next season but with experience at getting out of the Championship before and a lack of candidates available it is likely that Bruce will be at the helm at the start of the season.

For Newcastle their problems remain and they will need to act quickly and appoint a manager as soon as possible with the experiment with coach John Carver not sufficient for a club of Newcastle’s stature. Problems at board level remain with Mike Ashley seemingly confirming his intent to stay at the helm before the game, which will no doubt upset many of the Magpies faithful.

Once the new manager has been confirmed with candidates such as Steve McLaren and former manager Sam Allardyce now available, Ashley will need to back the new incumbent with the funds to ensure they sign some quality for next season and removing themselves from a relegation battle each season.
