Jockey Ryan Moore rode favourite Gleneagles to victory in the St James’ Palace Stakes to secure trainer Aidan O’Brian a record seventh win in the race.

Gleneagles already has an impressive reputation and the victory will further the claim that he is one of the best horses around. The horse has an impressive record of winning seven of its nine races and is closing in on the £1 million mark for race winnings.

Moore also rode Clondaw Warrior, trained by Willie Mullins, to victory in the Ascot Stakes, before completing his treble with Washington DC, also trained by O’Brian, in the final race of the day.

Elsewhere, French horse Solow won the Queen Anne Stakes and Goldream was victorious in the King’s Stand Stakes. Buratino beat off competition from Air Force Blue to win the Coventry Stakes.

Three of the six races were won by the favourites on day one the festival, meaning it has been a bad day for the bookies.
