Frampton v Quigg – Is The Timing Right?

Our Boxing writer Craig Muncey has mentioned in previous articles about how healthy British Boxing is currently and some great fights that are potentially out there with domestic fighters. Here he takes a look at a domestic battle that needs to occur and soon!

So a fight that could happen sooner rather than later and is something the UK boxing scene is hoping will occur soon is at Super Bantamweight between Carl Frampton, the IBF Champion and Scott Quigg, the WBA Champion and I and most others believe could be a great match up, worthy of stadium billing.

On Saturday, Frampton fought Alejandro Gonzalez Jnr in America, and initially struggled taking two counts, until he took control and won on points, however he made harder work than many believed against his opponent. Quigg on the other hand, stopped his opponent Kiko Martinez in the second round, a fight many believed Quigg was in for a tough night against a strong opponent who pushed Frampton in the two occasions they fought.

Frampton has now been exposed to the American fans and he has Barry McGuigan, a world wide known name in boxing looking after him.  Quigg does not have as high a profile as Frampton currently, but his promoter is Eddie Hearn who has put on some huge boxing cards under the Matchroom banner and is the promoter all fighters are wanting to work with, and after Saturday night both promotors must be seriously considering is the timing now right.

It has always seemed that Frampton has been looking further ahead than Quigg, such as fighters such as Guillermo Rigondeaux and Leo Santa Cruz, proven champions and highly thought of, however, I think Quigg is improving so fast and his stock is high after his dominant performance on the weekend, and if the fans want it enough this could happen before the year is out, Frampton needs a big performance now and there is a local lad who is willing to take him on, with the winner becoming WBA and IBF Champion.
