The 22nd annual pilgrimage to Blackpool for darts fans is upon us as the PDC BetVictor World Matchplay gets underway on Saturday night at the iconic Winter Gardens as Phil Taylor looks to defend the title he won last year when he defeated Michael van Gerwen 18-9 last year.

The Sports Lowdown previews the 2015 tournament as we take a look at the contenders, the debutants, the surprise packages and what we can expect as the PDC juggernaut  rolls into town.

This year some big names have failed to qualify for the tournament as the PDC continues to grow with names such as Wes Newton, Kevin Painter, Ronnie Baxter, Mark Webster, Dean Winstanley and Paul Nicholson, all failing to qualify having had less than impressive years to date.

With all these seasoned campaigners failing to qualify we take a look first at the debutants that have forced these esablished pro’s from one of the general public’s favourite tournaments.
