Zach Johnson triumphant at St Andrews

Zach Johnson won a three man, four hole play-off at St Andrews to win his second major title on an enthralling final day around the Old Course, beating Marc Leishman and Louis Oosthuizen. 

The 2007 US Masters champion had put himself into contention on Sunday, normally the final day but for weather problems that caused the final round to be delayed until the Monday. After finishing his round and going into the Clubhouse lead on 15-Under Par, Johnson faced a nervous wait to see if it would be enough.

Johnson held off a number of challengers including both play-off contenders as well as man of the moment Jordan Speith, Jason Day and challenges throughout the final day from a number of other golfers with as many as 12 players all in with a shout of picking up the Claret Jug on the back nine.

Both Speith and Day had chances to make it a five man lay-off on the last hole but there putt’s fell agonizingly short as Speith’s chances of winning all of this year’s major titles was ended whilst Day will rue yet another opportunity to win an elusive major title that is surely only a matter of time.

Both Leishman and Oosthuizen joined Johnson in the play-off and the Australian was first to fall off the radar as he dropped shots on both of the opening holes whilst Johnson birdied the first two, with Oosthuizen picking up a birdie to fall behind by one.

All of the players dropped shots on the treacherous 17th hole before a par for Johnson gave ‘King’ Louis a chance to extend the play-off, but his putt lipped out of the hole to give a clearly stunned and emotional Johnson his second major.
