There were lots of talking points from the second week of the Barclays Premiership with a heavy loss for last year’s champions, Chelsea with boss Jose Mourinho needing to get back to winning ways and a good away win for newly promoted Norwich.

Here are Premier League writer Liam Moore reviews all the action from the weekend’s action

Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester United

After last weeks home win against a tricky Tottenham team United were looking to make it two wins from two as they travelled to Villa Park. Januzaj picked up the only goal in the encounter with a deflected shot that beat Guzan in the 29th minute. Villa had claims of a penalty just before the break but Mike Dean wasn’t convinced. United should have been 2-0 up when Depay saw his effort narrowly miss the goal in the 73rd minute. Good start to the season for Manchester United who hope to keep up their 100% record when they entertain Newcastle next weekend.

Southampton 0-3 Everton

Everton ran riot at St Mary’s as they came out comfortable winners in this clash. Two goals from Lukaku and Barkley’s second of the season made sure that Everton left with all the spoils. Lukaku got his first from a well guided six yard header in the 22nd minute before doubling the lead and his tally right on the stroke of half time with lovely link up play with Barkley. Southampton came out strong in the second half and with Pelle missing two great chances to even things up it looked like it wasn’t their day. The game was all but finished in the 84th minute when Barkley latched on to a Coleman pass on the edge of the area before curling past Stekelenburg to make it 0-3.

Swansea 2-0 Newcastle

Swansea made sure that 10 man Newcastle were leaving with nothing as the home team ran out 2-0 winners. Shelvey’s clinical pass in the ninth minute was weighted perfectly for Gomis to take it round Krul and tap into an open net to make the perfect start for the hosts. Newcastle’s afternoon was then made even harder when Janmaat was shown a second yellow and was dismissed from the pitch. His first was a lunge on Montero in the 17th minute and his second was a needless foul, tugging Montero back as he beat him and Micheal Jones had no hesitation in showing the full back his second yellow. Swansea doubled their lead in the 52nd minute as the superb Montero ran down the right wing and produced a deadly ball for Ayew to superbly head home and seal the points. Sigurdsson came close to adding another as his 25-yard strike hit the bar and cannoned back out.

Sunderland 1-3 Norwich

Norwich traveled to the Stadium of Light for their first away encounter since winning promotion back to the Premier League. Pantilimon kept Norwich out early as he managed to get a hand to Howson’s shot and push it round the post. Norwich opened their account when their quickly taken corner was played out to Brady who saw his shot rebound off pantilimon and in off Martin. The goal seemed to spark life into Norwich and they had their second in the 37th minute when Whittaker kept his head for a cool finish pushed across the path of Pantilimon. Redmond saw the game off when he added a third in the 57th minute sliding the ball around the helpless Pantilimon. Sunderland did manage to pull one back which would turn out to be a consolation goal in the 88th minute when the young Watmore tidily struck a volleyed effort past Ruddy to make the score 1-3. Not a good start to the season for the black cats and are now desperate to get some points of the board when they host Swansea next week.

Tottenham 2-2 Stoke

This entertaining clash ended all level after a superb late come back from the potters that snatched them their first points of the campaign. Tottenham were 2-0 up at half time and in control of the game thanks to goals from, Dier and Chadli. Dier meeting Eriksen’s corner at the near post in the 19th minute. Chadli saw his effort deflect in during first half stoppage time to see Tottenham going into the break looking firmly in control. Huge pressure from the potters saw them handed a penalty in the 78th minute as Joselu beat Alderweireld and drew the foul. Arnautovic keeping his cool and pulling one back. Five minutes later and the game was all level, Ireland whipping in a delightful ball for Diouf to guide a close range header into the Tottenham goal. The latter stages of the match were all Stoke as they piled men forward in search for a winning goal. Stoke will be delighted with the way they fought back and picked up a good point, for Tottenham though they will see this as two points lost and how costly will it be in the race for champion’s league football?
