5 players Chelsea should sign in January.

By their normally high standards Chelsea have made a very poor start to the season, and their lack of transfers has played a part in that. They have a very good squad, but could still benefit from a few top signings.

Sitting eight points behind leaders and title rivals Manchester City, Jose Mourinho’s side are already looking like they will have too much to make up but the Premier League is a funny old league and the ‘Special One’ will no doubt have a plan up his sleeve come January.

Here our writer Matt Birkinshaw takes a look at 5 signings we could see at Stamford Bridge in January as they look to add quality to their squad.

1. John Stones

Jose Mourinho wants Stones to be John Terry’s long term replacement, and January would be the ideal time to bring him in. Chelsea have looked very shaky at the back this season so far, and Stones could walk in to the team and keep his place for many years to come for the 21 year old.

Training with John Terry everyday would be great for his development for both club and country; and although he hasn’t had a great start to the season, Stones could learn a lot from one of the finest defenders the Premier League will ever see.

If he was to stat at Everton, his progress would still happen but maybe not as quick and for England and the upcoming Euro 2016 tournament, learning from the likes of Terry and forging a partnership with his likely England centre-back partner in Gary Cahill could be crucial for England’s chances.
