Haas F1 team have announced that Mexican, Esteban Gutierrez, will drive for the team in 2016.

Haas announced their final driver in Mexico City on Friday evening. This happened after the first practice day of the Mexican GP. This weekend will be the GPs return to the calendar after 23 years off.

Gutierrez will join seasoned driver, Romain Grosjean, in the American team’s debut in 2016. This will be the first USA owned team in Formula 1 since 1986.

The announcement was not a surprise as it had been said that Haas wanted a North American driver who had also had time in an F1 car.

The 24 year old made his debut in F1 in 2013 driving for Swiss team, Sauber. He stayed in Sauber until the end of the 2014 where he was then declined a seat for the 2015 season. The Mexican has been Ferrari’s test driver throughout the 2015 season.

Haas have strong links with the Italian team. Haas’ 2016 car will have a Ferrari engine and the team will buy as many parts from Ferrari as they can. They will also have access to Ferrari’s wind tunnel which their 2016 car has been designed in.
