100/1 outsider Prince of Penzance has won the 2015 Melbourne Cup after being ridden to victory by jockey Michelle Payne.

Payne dedicated her victory to female jockeys and said she hoped her victory would inspire others. In winning this year’s race Payne becomes the first ever female jockey to win the prestigious race.

Frankie Dettori finished second on Max Dynamite, but he now faces an investigation and possible ban after being accused of careless riding. Third place when to Criterion, which was ridden by Michael Walker.

There was no joy for Ryan Moore, for won the race last year. He was on board the well fancied Snow Sky but failed to make any impression on the race. Jamie Spencer finished fifth on Big Ornage but like Dettori faces a ban after being accused of interference.

The race is the biggest on the Asutralian horse racing calendar but few punters would have been celebrating due to the surprise identity of the winner.
