The hearts of Leicester were broken at the Emirates as Arsenal overturned a one-goal deficit to come out on top.

On his return from injury, Danny Welbeck scored the winning goal in the 95th-minute to give the Gunners hope in the race for the Premier League title.

Leicester went into this game five points clear at the league’s summit and knew any result would have been a bonus after impressive wins over Liverpool and Manchester City.

After making it through a spell of Arsenal pressure the Foxes drew first blood from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time. Nacho Monreal was adjudged to have brought down Jamie Vardy in the box and the Premier League’s top goal scorer converted the resulting spot-kick.

The decision to award the penalty was a controversial one and referee Martin Atkinson ensured the controversy continued shortly after the restart. Danny Simpson was dismissed for a second bookable offence meaning Leicester had to play with a man less for the majority of the second half.

Arsene Wenger turned to Theo Walcott in an attempt to get back in the game and the England forward rewarded his manager’s faith. He was able to guide the ball past Kasper Schmeichel after a neat knockdown from Olivier Giroud.

Leicester were always going to be up against it with a man short but a valiant effort counted for nothing as Arsenal stole the points in injury time.

A needless free-kick conceded by Marcin Wasilewski gave the Gunners an opportunity to get the ball into the Foxes’ box one last time. Mesut Ozil’s delivery found Welbeck who glanced the ball home.

The goal was particularly harsh on Schmeichel who made numerous excellent saves throughout the match.

This was only Leicester’s third loss of the season and after some tough fixtures they have a two-week gap until they face Norwich City.

With Arsenal closing down the Foxes it makes the title race even more exciting.
