Cheltenham Festival – Day Four Review

JCB Triumph Hurdle

The final day of this year’s Cheltenham festival got under way with a victory for Ivanovich Gorbatov. The Aidan O’Brien trained horse went into the race as the 9-2 favourite, and it held off competition from Apple’s Jade, which was priced at 12-1. Third place went to Footpad, ridden by Ruby Walsh.

Vincent O’Brien County Handicap Hurdle

Brothers Dan and Harry Skelton enjoyed success in the second race of the day. Superb Story was trained by Dan and ridden by Harry and the 8-1 priced horse beat second placed Fethard Player, a 33-1 shot, by two and a half lengths. Sternrubin, a German horse, finished in third, and was also priced at 33-1.

Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle

Unowhatimeanharry was victorious in the third race of the day. Noel Fehily rode the 11-1 shot to victory in an exciting race, finishing just clear of Fagan, which was priced at 33-1. Champers On Ice finished third, with the favourite Barters Hill coming in in fourth position.

Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase

All eyes were on Cue Card going into the biggest race of the festival, The Gold Cup. The horse was aiming to win the Triple Crown and scoop a £1 million bonus. Paddy Brennan was on board the horse, and at one point it looked as though it could make history. However, as the race entered the final stages, the Colin Tizzard trained horse fell. The eventual winner was the pre-race favourite, Don Cussak, ridden by BJ Geraghty and trained by Gordon Elliot. The nine-year old pulled away from the Ruby Walsh ridden Djakadam, which finished in second place. Third place went to Don Poli, priced at 9-2.

St. James’s Place Foxhunter Chase Challenge Cup

Nina Carberry rode On The Fringe to victory in a thrilling race. The 13/8 favourite beat Marito into second place in a close finish. Paint the Clouds finished the race in third, while Current Event finished fourth. Victoria Pendleton performed well on board Pacha Du Polder, finishing fifth.

Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle

Ibis Du Rheu won the penultimate race of the festival. The Paul Nicholls trained horse was priced at 14-1, but jockey Jack Sherwood rode the horse to a surprise win. Flying Angel finished second, while 50-1 shot Sky Khan finished third.

Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase Challenge Cup

In the final race of the festival, Paul Nicholls made it back-to-back wins as 28-1 shot Solar Impulse won by over three lengths. Dandridge finished second, with 9-2 favourite Rock The World finishing third.
