It’s been a difficult start to life in the Championship for Aston Villa following last seasons relegation, and a major EFL Cup upset has continued the poor start for new manager Roberto Di Matteo after his side lost at League Two Luton Town.

Five time League Cup winners Villa, who are without a win away from home since August last year and without a competitive win in all competitions since February, took the lead at Kenilworth Road through Jordan Ayew’s low shot, but Jake Gray levelled for the hosts with a tidy finish for the Hatters.

Former Norwich City Midfielder Cameron McGheehan pounced on a fortuitous rebound to give the League Two side the lead, before a Jores Okore own goal sealed the victory.

Nathan Jones’s side will now face Garry Monk’s Leeds United in the second round, whilst Di Matteo will need to refocus his attention back to the Championship.

In the other games, both Leeds United and QPR needed a penalty shootout to avoid a cup upset against Fleetwood Town and Swindon Town respectively, whilst Burton Albion won 3-2 at home against Bury.
