Great Britain’s Charlotte Dujardin has retained her Olympic title from London 2012, winning the individual dressage gold on Valegro.

Silver and bronze went to Germans Isabell Werth and Kristina Broring-Sphrehe respectively.

For the 31-year-old, this is her third Olympic gold medal. The Brit secured the win with 93.8575 and gave Great Britain their 40th medal of Rio 2016.

Great Britain’s duo of Carl Hester finished 7th and Fiona Bigwood finished in 17th.

This gold for Team GB comes after they won a silver in the Team Dressage event on Friday.

The partnership between Dujardin and her horse Valegro has been a long one. Dujardin won gold in 2015 at the World Cup with the horse, as well as in 2014 at the World Equestrian Games. Notably, Valegro took Charlotte to double gold in London 2012.

For Valegro, it may be his final Olympics, as there has been talk of retirement for the 14-year-old horse.
