Great Britain’s Max Whitlock claimed Britain’s first all-around gymnastics medal in over a century.

Kohei Uchimura retained his Olympic title ahead of Ukrainian Oleg Verniaiev.

Whitlock got off to a great start in the all-around final, scoring 15.875 on the pommel horse. This put the Brit in the lead after the first rotation.

However, champion Kohei Uchimura did not take long to show the crowd why he is Olympic champion. Scoring a 15.766 on floor and then 14.900 on pommel horse. Consistency is key for the all-around event, but despite grabbing gold, Uchimura will not compete in any of the other individual events of Rio. The Japanese gymnast comes from Rio with two golds, all-around team and individual.

For Ukrainian Oleg Verniaiev, he had a strong performance on all apparatus, scoring above 15 points on everything except the high bar, which saw him finish with 14.800. This was Verniaiev’s final apparatus and the pressure got to him after seeing Uchimura grab the top spot. The Ukrainian finished 0.1 points behind the Japanese gymnast.

Despite narrowly missing gold, Oleg will go into the parallel bars final knowing that he is on fine form. He scored a 16.100 on the apparatus, the highest score on any during the all-around event.

Britain’s Nile Wilson performed well, finishing eighth with 89.565 points. It isn’t over for 20-year old as he will compete for medals in the high bar final later on in the week.

For Max Whitlock, he will be hoping to continue his great form on the pommel horse final, as well as the floor final.
