The penultimate round of 2016/17 fixtures saw Monaco unofficially win the title and Nancy relegated, while huge wins for Bastia and Dijon set up an exciting final day.

Sunday 14 May

Bastia 2-0 Lorient Venue – Stade Armand Cesari

Two goals in the latter stages saw Bastia earn a huge three points to keep Lorient in the relegation battle, setting up an enthralling final day.

Enzo Crivelli scored the opener in the 74th-minute, before Gael Danic made sure of the victory with six minutes remaining.

Just one point now separates Lorient and Bastia in 18th and 19th respectively, but both sides are still in with a chance of escaping relegation.

Bordeaux 1-1 Marseille Venue – Nouveaux Stade de Bordeaux

Bordeaux weren’t able to leapfrog Marseille in the league standings as they were held to a draw at the Nouveaux Stade de Bordeaux.

The hosts were off to the best possible start when Diego Rolan broke the deadlock after just two minutes, but Bafetimbi Gomis’ strike on the hour ensured Marseille took a share of the points.

Marseille still have their one-point advantage over Bordeaux in the table, as the two sides sit 5th and 6th ahead of the last game.

Caen 0-1 Rennes Venue – Stade Michel d’Ornano

Rennes made it back-to-back 1-0 wins with a narrow victory at the Stade Michel d’Ornano versus Caen.

Giovanni Sio converted Ludovic Baal’s delivery in the second period and that was all the visitors needed to win the game.

The three points took Rennes up to 9th, while Caen need a win and will be relying on other results next week as they slipped to 17th and are in danger of dropping to Ligue 2.

Dijon 2-0 Nancy Venue – Stade Gaston Gérard

A home win for Dijon saw them take a large step to avoiding the drop, at the expense of Nancy who became the first team to return to the second tier of French football.

Goals from Frederic Sammaritano and Lois Diony in the second half earned the biggest three points of Dijon’s season, but they are still in need of a result to make sure of their safety.

Dijon climbed out of the bottom three and now sit one point above the danger zone, while Nancy’s first season back in the top flight ended in heartbreak as their relegation was confirmed.

Metz 1-1 Toulouse Venue – Stade Saint-Symphorien

Metz and Toulouse couldn’t be separated at the Stade Saint-Symphorien as both sides settled for a draw.

Toulouse opened the scoring after just eight minutes; Martin Braithwaite with the goal for Les Pitchouns.

Metz were back on level terms not long after the hour mark as Ismaila Sarr scored the equaliser, but neither side could find the winner as the game progressed.

The two sides remain level on 43 points, but three places separate Toulouse in 11th from Metz in 14th.

Monaco 4-0 Lille Venue – Stade Louis II

Monaco have all but guaranteed the league title with an emphatic victory over Lille, but could mathematically secure the championship on Wednesday.

A dominant display was kicked off with a Radamel Falcao goal in the 6th-minute, before Bernardo Silva made it 2-0 moments before the break following some fine work by Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe set up Falcao for his second of the game in the 69th-minute, before an own goal from Julian Alonso completed the rout in the final minute of regulation time.

Monaco now just need one point from their games against Saint-Étienne and Rennes to secure the title, while Lille slipped to 12th in the league.

Montpellier 1-3 Lyon Venue – Stade de la Mosson

A poor campaign from Montpellier was summed up with a final home game ending in defeat to Lyon.

Nabil Fekir and Alexandre Lacazette gave Lyon a two-goal lead within a five-minute spell in the first half, but Steve Mounie reduced the lead for Montpellier in the 35th-minute.

With the match evenly balanced in the second half, it wasn’t until the fifth minute of added time that Lyon sealed the victory as Lacazette scored his second of the game.

Lyon secured 4th place, but Montpellier are down in 15th with Ligue 1 safety being the only positive of the campaign.

Nantes 4-1 Guingamp Venue – Stade de la Beaujoire

Nantes continued a great season with a strong performance and win against Guingamp on home soil.

Adrien Thomasson’s goal was all that separated the two teams in the first half, but Emiliano Sala and Prejuce Nakoulma made it 3-0 to the hosts in the second.

Lucas Deaux pulled a goal back for the visitors, however it was no more than a consolation as Sala scored his second of the game with just over ten minutes remaining.

Guingamp sit 10th in the league standings, while Nantes are set for a fine finish to the campaign after climbing to 7th.

Nice 0-2 Angers Venue – Allianz Riviera

An excellent season for Nice is ending disappointingly with consecutive defeats; the most recent being Sunday’s loss at home to Angers.

Cheikh Ndoye’s 35th-minute strike was all that separated the two sides until Karl Toko Ekambi handed Angers a two-goal lead in the 93rd-minute.

Nice can now only finish 3rd but the win saw Angers move up to 13th.

Saint-Étienne 0-5 Paris Saint-Germain Venue – Stade Geoffroy-Guichard

PSG are finishing the season in style, but even a 5-0 thrashing of Saint-Étienne isn’t quite good enough to beat Monaco to the title.

Les Parisians had a two-goal lead at half-time thanks to goals from Edinson Cavani and Lucas Moura. The two goal scorers completed their braces within six minutes of each other in the second half to make it 4-0 to PSG, with Cavani having the opportunity to reach 50 goals for the season against Caen next week.

Julian Draxler scored PSG’s fifth on the stroke of full-time to compound Saint-Étienne’s misery.

The current champions have finished 2nd to an impressive Monaco outfit, while another unsatisfactory display left Les Verts 8th.
