Champions League – 13/9

It was another good night in Europe for English sides as both Tottenham and Manchester City got off to winning starts, whilst Liverpool were held at home against Sevilla.

 

GROUP E

Five time champions, Liverpool, made their return to the Champions League for the first time since 2014 but were held at home against Sevilla, in a repeat of the 2016 Europa League final. Wissam Ben Yedder gave the Spanish side the lead inside five minutes, be for eight Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah turned the game around before the break. Firmino could have added a third, but his penalty struck the post, before Joaquin Correa levelled in the final 20 minutes.

Elsewhere in the group, NK Maribor rescued a point at home against Spartak Moscow thanks to a strike from Bohar five minutes from time.

 

GROUP F

It was a great night for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City as they eased past Dutch side Feyenoord. Defender, John Stones, opened the scoring after just two minutes, before striker, Sergio Aguero, netted his 23rd Champions League goal in just 41 appearances to double the Citizens lead. Jesus added a third before the break, before Stones netted his second, and City’s fourth, in the second half.

Shakhtar Donetsk won their opening game as they beat Napoli 2-1 at the Donbass Arena.

 

GROUP G

FC Porto 1-3 Besiktas

2004 winners Porto were losers in their opening game as Süper Lig winners, Besiktas, came away with three points following their 3-1 victory.

Also in Group G, RB Leipzig made history as they scored their first ever Champions League goal in their 1-1 draw with Monaco.

 

GROUP H

Tottenham 3-1 Borussia Dortmund

Tottenham overcame their Wembley woes as they won at the national stadium for the first time this season against German side, Dortmund. Son opened the scoring inside five minutes, but Andriy Yarmolenko equalised soon after. But the night belonged to Harry Kane, as the England forward netted twice to give Spurs the win.

Real Madrid 3-0 Apoel Nicosia

Current champions, Real Madrid, top Group H on goal difference as they overcome Cypriot side, Apoel Nicosia. A brace from Cristiano Ronaldo and an athletic effort from Sergio Ramos was enough to ensure Zinedine Zidane’s side all three points.
