Can Roger Federer win another Grand Slam?

Roger Federer rolled back the years and produced some of his best tennis during the Wimbledon Championships, getting to the final, and having only dropped his service game once shows how well he was playing.

The semi final victory over Andy Murray was as good a performance as I’ve seen from the Swiss in many years; Murray is one of the best returners in the game but barely had a sniff on the Federer serve. To play against the 3rd best player in the world and not get broken once is something you will very rarely see. If he’d played like that in the final I think he would have beaten Novak Djokovic.

Roger will be 34 in a few weeks so age isn’t on his side, but as things stand he, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic are still some way ahead of their nearest rivals, so he has every chance of winning the upcoming US Open. Djokovic will head in to the tournament as heavy favourite after his Wimbledon win, and will definitely be the man to beat, but if Federer gets a good draw and can produce the style of tennis he did at Wimbledon, then he has every chance of winning the title.

2016 will probably be his last season, so he still has potentially five Grand Slams, and his 18th career slam, left to try and win. The US Open and Wimbledon are Federer’s best chances of adding to his Grand Slam tally. If the Swiss is to win another slam his service game will have to be at its very best.

Djokovic and Murray are fitter than Federer nowadays, so it’ll be vital he doesn’t have too many long matches, so he can preserve as much energy as possible for the latter stages. Djokovic and Murray have both won one US Open title each, compared to Federer’s five, so that alone should give the former number one a lot confidence.

If Federer can avoid Murray and Djokovic in the US Open draw it will really boost his chances; on current form those would be the two players he would want to avoid most. With Rafa Nadal on the decline, and the inconsistent form of the other top 10 players, Federer should really fancy his chances of getting to the final at the US Open, and if he plays like he did against Andy Murray in the Wimbledon semi-final he will have a great chance of lifting the trophy.

As long as Federer remains healthy, serves at his very best, and still has the burning desire to keep on going, I can see him winning another slam.
