Championship side Leeds United have signed Kemar Roofe from League One outfit, Oxford United, for an undisclosed fee.

The 23 year old, who scored 26 goals as Oxford won promotion from League Two last season, is Garry Monk’s sixth summer signing, after the club also acquired Swansea City’s Matty Grimes on loan.

Roofe, who signed permanently from West Bromwich Albion after a successful loan spell, was also named the League Two Player of the Year last season, and arrives at Elland Road for a reported fee of around £3million. He also famously netted a brace against Monk’s former employers, Swansea City, as the U’s beat the Premier League side in the third round of the FA Cup.

Oxford United chairman, Darryl Eales, said; “The transfer of Kemar is bitter sweet. I am delighted for Kemar personally; he has been a pleasure to work with: consummately professional in everything he does and an outstanding team man. He leaves with our sincere thanks and very best wishes.

“Kemar’s transfer is a reflection of the strength of squad we are assembling and our success on the pitch. We would prefer to keep all players but Kemar wanted to test his talent at a higher level and ultimately, once Leeds met our valuation, we would not want to stand in a player’s way.
“We are serious about preparing for a strong campaign in the season ahead and will continue to enhance the squad over the next few weeks. Overall we are in great shape with a superb positive mood across the squad and we can’t wait for our first friendly on Saturday.”
Head Coach Michael Appleton has echoed the Chairman‘s thoughts; “Kemar has done brilliantly for us. His attitude has been spot on and he works so hard at his game that I am sure he will continue to develop and has a really bright future ahead of him.”
Following the move, Roofe said; “It’s an exciting new chapter for me but I want to thank everyone at Oxford for making my time there so memorable. The chairman, the manager, the players and in particular the fans have been outstanding and it is a club that is always going to mean a lot to me.”

Following the departure of fellow forward, Danny Hylton, who joined League Two side Luton Town, the U’s will need to look for further firepower up front, after bringing in former Birmingham City striker, Wes Thomas. Appleton does also have Ryan Taylor as a strike option, but the former Portsmouth forward missed spells of last season through injury.

And despite seeing six new faces come through the doors at Grenoble Road, U’s fans will be looking to add more before their League One season kicks off, particularly with high interest in teenage sensation, Callum O’Dowda.
