Manchester United have won this season’s inaugural curtain raiser as the FA Cup winners beat Premier League champions Leicester City in the Community Shield final at Wembley.
It was a win for new Red Devil’s boss, Jose Mourinho, in his first competitive game in charge at the club, with debutant striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic netting the winner.
Midfielder Jesse Lingard, who scored the winner at Wembley as Louis van Gaal’s side won the FA Cup, put Mourinho’s side ahead when he ran 40 yards before beating four players to slot home the opener.
But the Foxes, who defied all odds to win the Premier League last season, leveled through England forward Jamie Vardy, who capitalised on Marouane Fellaini’s poor back pass before rounding goalkeeper David de Gea for the equaliser.
But the 34 year old summer signing from PSG, had the final say, as his towering header above defender Wes Morgan beat Kasper Schmeichel with just seven minutes remaining.
This was the third consecutive season that the FA Cup winners had beaten the Premier League champions in the Community Shield final, with Arsenal winning the previous two after beating Chelsea and Manchester City respectively.
