This Saturday, Wembley Stadium hosts the League Two play-off Final between Southend United and Wycombe Wanderers.
Wycombe are unbeaten against the Shrimpers this season, drawing 2-2 at Roots Hall before winning 4-1 at Adams Park.
Wycombe finished the season in 4th. Having occupied a top three position for the majority of the season, the Chairboys dropped into the playoffs with just two games remaining, following a home defeat against Morecambe.
As for Southend, they’ve been in and around the playoffs for most of the season. Following the Chairboys penultimate day defeat, Southend moved into the final automatic promotion place, but lost to the same side on the final day, dropping them to 5th.
Wycombe eased past Plymouth in the play-off semi-finals. The Chairboys led 3-0 in the first leg, before two late goals from the Pilgrims reduced the deficit. Wycombe then won the second leg 2-1 on home turf, progressing to the final 5-3 on aggregate.
Southend had a slightly more difficult semi-final. Having ended their first leg 1-1 away to Stevenage, the Shrimpers needed an extra thirty minutes to reach Wembley in the second leg at Roots Hall. It was 1-1 again, 2-2 on aggregate, before Shrimpers striker Barry Corr missed a stoppage-time penalty. But it didn’t matter in the end as two goals in extra time sent the Shrimpers to Wembley.
The game takes place tomorrow, kicking off at 5.30pm.
