Capello edging closer to dismissal from Russian national team

The Russian Football Union appear to be losing patience with the national coach, Fabio Capello following last week’s 1-0 defeat against Austria in their Group G Euro 2016 qualifier.

But, Russian media have reported that a clause in Capello’s contract means the federation would have to pay £15m in compensation, instead asking for the Italian to resign.

The Italians tenure as head coach has been troubled to say the least, having recently complained about unpaid wages, resulting in questions in Parliament regarding his salary.

It had been reported that billionaire Alisher Usmanov has given the Russian Football Union 300 million roubles (£3.5 million) to pay salary arrears owed to Capello.

It is likely, according to former Russian Federation president Vyacheslav Koloskov, that Capello will be sacked on Thursday. CSKA Moscow boss Leonard Slutsky is the favourite to replace the Italian, having been with his club since 2009.

Capello took over as the Russia head coach in 2012, and despite a dismal World Cup in which Russia finished 3rd behind Belgium and Algeria, failing to win any of their three games, Capello’s contract was extended until the end of the 2018 World Cup, hosted by Russia.

Capello has failed to deliver during his time in Russia. In ten competitive matches, Russia have won just twice; against Liechtenstein and one against Montenegro – awarded after the match was abandoned due to crowd trouble.
