Henrik Stenson and Dustin Johnson both made an impressive start to the US Open, topping the leader board after day one with a score of five-under-par.
Although there were fears that the Chambers Bay course could be nearly unplayable, several golfers hit below-par opening rounds in the first day of the tournament.
Below the leading pair are a clutch of Americans. Patrick Reed is currently out in second on his own following an impressive round of four-under-par. Matt Kuchar, Ben Martin and amateur Brain Campbell sit at three under par, while a host of players, including Masters champion Jordan Spieth, Jason Dufner and Jason Day sit on two-under-par.
Veterans Colin Montgomerie and Miguel Angel Jimenez are just four shots off the lead having recorded rounds of one-under-par.
Bubba Watson, Adam Scott and Sergio Garcia all took 70 shots to complete the course, meaning they are par for the course after the first round. Previous winners Rory McIlroy and Webb Simpson are both some way off the leaders on two-over-par and will need to put together a good second round to remain in contention.
Two of the biggest names in golf sit at the wrong end of the leader board. Rickie Fowler endured a nightmare round to find himself on eleven-over-par after his first round, while Tiger Woods is one shot better off at ten-over-par. Both players will need a miracle to make the cut.
The tournament is set up for an intriguing second day. If Brian Campbell can keep have another good day he could well find himself being one of the stories of the tournament. That said, the stars of day one were Stenson and Johnson, whose big hitting helped them negotiate the course with relative ease.
