US Open Day Three- Day Overcomes Fainting to Join Leaders

Australian Jason Day hit a two-under-par third round a day after fainting on the course to move joint-top of the leader board with just one round of golf left to play in this year’s US Open. Day is joined at the top by overnight leader Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson and Branden Grace.

27 year old South African Grace was not expected to have much of an impact on the tournament but the South African has been amongst the leaders since day one. Grace is playing in just his third US Open, his previous best finish in the competition being tied 51st.

There is a three shot gap between the leaders and the chasing pack, and while this will not be impossible to make up, it looks as though anyone coming from left field will have to play one of the rounds of their lives. Louis Oosthuizen looks the most likely to do so, having hit two consecutive rounds of four-under-par to move to one-under-par for the tournament and charge up the leader board. Cameron Smith, Shane Lowry and JB Holmes are the only other players to be under par for the tournament.

Patrick Reed has dropped down the leader board after hitting a third round 76 to find himself at one-over for the tournament. Justin Rose and Adam Scott also hit over-par rounds, meaning their slim chances of winning the tournament now appear to be over.

With four men tied for the lead, the tournament could well be decided by a play-off. The course is also becoming harder to play and if weather conditions are unfavourable it could be that any score under-par is good enough to win the tournament.
