GERMANY 4 SWEDEN 1

Pia Sundhage’s Sweden were unable to stop the Germans marching towards the Quarter-Finals in Ottawa.

Forward Anja Mittag gave Silvia Neid’s Germany the lead after a poor pass was intercepted, and was allowed to link up with teammate Celia Sasic in a give-and-go that enabled the 30 year old to fire past goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl.

Then, Player of the Match, Mittag was pulled down in the area and Sasic netted for the penalty spot to make it 2-0 to the Germans with 10 minutes of the first half to go.

Germany continued to control the game and with Sweden pegged back in their own area, Sasic headed the ball past Lindahl for Germany’s third goal in the second half.

Sweden did manage to pull a goal back, when a Therese Sjogran free kick was headed in by defender Linda Sembrant late on, but the Germans response was quick and put the result in no doubt as 23 year old midfielder Dzsenfier Marozsan slid in and her looping effort spooned over Lindahl.

CHINA PR 1 CAMEROON 0

In a high tempo game, both China and Cameroon had chances aplenty but it was the former who can now look towards the Quarter-Finals after narrowly beating their African opponents in Edmonton.

Cameroon could have put themselves in front as early as the first 20 seconds when forward Madeleine Ngono Mani fired an effort over the crossbar.

However, 12 mintues later Wei Hao’s side broke the dead-lock after defender Li Donga was found by a deep corner, and the ball eventually came to striker Wang Shanshan who volleyed home.

In the search for an equaliser, Cameroon’s Gabrielle Onguene could only find the side-netting after a deflected Gaelle Enganamouit free kick had found her.

But China held on and now progress into the Quarter-Finals of the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
