Arizona Cardinals have appointed the NFL’s first female coach, former Texas Revolution running back, Jen Welter.

The 37 year old, who spent 14 years as a professional player, has both played and coached in the men’s Division.

Head coach Bruce Arians has hired Welter as the clubs new linebacker coach for pre-season.

“One thing I’ve learned from players is, if you can make me better, I don’t care if you’re the Green Hornet, I’ll listen,” said Arians.

“She’ll have a great opportunity with this internship through training camp to open some doors for her.”

The 37 year old, who has a master’s degree in sports psychology along with a PhD, said; “I’m honoured to be a part of this amazing team.”

She played as a linebacker for 14 years with the Dallas Diamonds in the Women’s Football Alliance.

Welter then became the first female to play a non-kicking role in the men’s professional league during her time at the Texas Revolution in the Indoor Football League last year.

She became the first female coach too when she coached the linebackers for the Revolution last year.
