Arsenal have won the Emirates Cup for the first time since 2010 after a 1-0 win against Wolfsburg, giving the Gunners their fourth success in the competition from eight meetings.
Manager Arsene Wenger made 10 changes from the side that thumped Lyon 6-0, with German international Mesut Ozil being the only surviving player.
New signing Petr Cech, who was making his Emirates Stadium debut, looked comfortable against the German Cup winners, notably saving from Joshua Guilavogui’s 25 yard effort.
But it was Arsenal’s 17 year old winger Jeff Reine-Adelaide, who also impressed against Lyon, that was showcasing his talent. The teenagers assist to Theo Walcott produced the games only goal early in the second half.
But Wolfsburg, who ended last season 2nd in the Bundesliga, continued to press after conceding, but neither former Gunner Nicklas Bendtner and former Chelsea midfielder Kevin De Bruyne were unable to find a way past Cech.
The former Chelsea player has been involved in the double success after Arsenal claimed the Asia Trophy last week, and both he and Wenger will be hoping to make it a hat-trick when Arsenal meet Chelsea in this Sunday’s Community Shield final at Wembley.
