The Champions League T20 competition has been scrapped with immediate effect with organisers citing a lack of interest in the tournament for it being dis-continued.
The tournament which featured side’s from some of the world’s leading T20 competitions has struggled to get off the ground with little fan interest and dwindling media coverage. The 2014 winners were the Chennai Super Kings, led by India’s One Day captain MS Dhoni.
The tournament was launched in 2009 by the boards of Australia, India and South Africa and the inaugural competition was won by Australian side New South Wales Blues with the competition prize fund reaching $6 million by its final inception of the tournament.
English sides have not played in the tournament since for the last three season’s after it clashed with the end of the English domestic season and with little interest from the English media, the tournament has failed to captivate an audience in the UK.
Somerset were the most successful English side, reaching the semi-finals in 2011 with other sides including Leicestershire also taking part in the tournament during it’s time.
