FA Community Shield Preview: Arsenal v Chelsea

The curtain raiser to the new season gets underway this Sunday as the FA Community Shield contest between League winners Chelsea and FA Cup winners Arsenal begin nine months of what is sure to be another installment of the crazy world we call the FA Premier League.

The annual contest see’s the Gunners try and win a second consecutive Community Shield as they look to repeat last season’s 3-0 victory over Manchester City. Here at The Sports Lowdown we take a look at previous winners over the last 10 years before we delve further into this season’s clash and preview Sunday’s game at Wembley.

Previous Community Shields

Over the last 10 years the tie has been dominated by some of English football’s greatest teams with Manchester United winning half of them which included David Moyes winning his only trophy, whilst in charge of the Old Trafford club in 2013 with a 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic. The previous Manchester United victories over the last 10 years had all come during the Sir Alex Ferguson reign.

Arsenal are looking to repeat their success last year when they swept past a disappointing Manchester City 3-0 with goals from Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud. Other past winners over the last 10 years include Sunday’s contenders Chelsea, a Rafa Benitez inspired Liverpool in 2006 and Manchester City in 2012.

2014 – Arsenal 3-0 Manchester City

2013 – Manchester United 2-0 Wigan Athletic

2012 – Manchester City 3-2 Chelsea

2011 – Manchester United 3-2 Manchester City

2010 – Manchester United 3-1 Chelsea

2009 – Chelsea 2-2 Manchester United (Chelsea won 4-1 on penalties)

2008 – Manchester United 0-0 Portsmouth (Man Utd won 3-1 on penalties)

2007 – Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea (Man Utd won 3-0 on penalties)

2006 – Liverpool 2-1 Chelsea

2005 – Chelsea 2-1 Arsenal
