UEFA President Michel Platini has been asked by a number of federations to stand for election as the President of FIFA at the next election that will see Sepp Blatter relinquish control of footballs governing body.
Former French international Platini has been the president of Europe’s governing body UEFA since 2007 and has widely been touted as a future president of the scandal hit organisation. Platini has supporters in many of the federations across Europe, but has also now received endorsements for the role from federations across Asia, South America and CONCACAF to be the next FIFA President.
Platini has yet to announce if he plans to stand but with support across the footballing world, it is likely that Platini will indeed stand in the election, rumoured to be either in December or the new year. Current FIFA President Blatter announced his resignation from the role in June as the widespread scandal and corruption saw him face a battle for the leadership, which although he won, he confirmed that his mandate was not supported by all of football and chose to resign.
There had been rumours that Blatter was considering a U-turn and announcing plans to run for election again but recent involvement from sponsors Coca-Cola, asking for complete reform and many widely asking for complete reform of FIFA, Blatter has wisely decided enough is enough and will oversee the reform until a new President is elected.
Other candidates for the FIFA Presidency include Prince Ali who contested the leadership contest against Blatter earlier in the summer, as well as African Football President Issa Hayatou, a Cameroonian former athlete.
