With just a couple of days to go before the start of the final major of the year, all eyes will head over the pond to Wisconsin as the golfing world looks to see who has hit form at the right time and who has peaked too soon as the USPGA gets underway.
Our writer Adam Fowler will be picking 5 players who he believes will be in contention to lift the Wanamaker Trophy on the final day this Sunday at Whistling Straits.
Jordan Spieth
I think it’s fair to say this man will definitely be in amongst it on the final day this year. Although he may be an obvious choice, he simply cannot be discounted as he has been in unbelievable form throughout the season and I strongly believe he has what it takes to come out on top this weekend.
Spieth has played 19 competitions this year. He secured himself a top 25 finish in 15, with 12 of them being top 10’s. Of course, this includes two triumphant performances: one at Augusta, where he equalled the great Tiger Woods’ 72 hole record of -18, to win his first major and secondly, lifting the U.S Open trophy at Chambers Bay.
After watching Dustin Johnson three putt from inside 12 feet, it meant he edged out his fellow American by one shot on -5. And one more shot was all he needed at The Open this year to force his way into a four way play-off where he just fell short.
A win this weekend would take Jordan Spieth to the number 1 spot in the world; so what more of an incentive would he need to go out and win his 3rd Major of the year and cement his place as the hottest golfer on the planet.
