Usain Bolt took the 200m crown to go along with his 100m crown at the World Championships in Beijing, putting a further mark on his rivalry with USA’s Justin Gatlin.
With the rivalry between both Bolt and Gatlin talked about in the lead up to the World Championships, Bolt this time comfortably beat his rival Gatlin, who has courted controversy since his comeback from a second ban for taking performance enhancing drugs.
Gatlin recovered enough to finish second but the margin of victory was greater over 200m after Bolt pipped the American sprinter to the 100m title earlier in the week. British sprinter Zharnel Hughes, running between the two, finished in a credible 5th place, finishing with a personal best but it is Bolt who goes away to be lauded by the pundits as the man who saved Athletics.
Gatlin has received little support across the Athletics world since his ban and had come into the tournament having won a number of consecutive races with Bolt having question marks against him after an injury fueled couple of years.
Bolt finished with a time of 19.55 to take the Gold medal whilst Gatlin took Silver with a time of 19.74. South Africa’s Anaso Jobodwana took Bronze in a time of 19.87.
Elsewhere in Beijing, Great Britain’s Christine Ohuruogu failed to take a medal in the 400m final finishing in 8th position. Dina Asher-Smith made it through to the final of the 200m after winning her heat.
