League Two Preview: 18 August

The first set of Tuesday night fixtures in League Two as sides look to put a number of early successive wins together, whilst others look to avoid back to back defeats. There were a couple of shock results at the weekend, and we could well be set for a couple more this week. Here is your League Two Preview:

Morecambe vs Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe are the leaders in League Two after scoring five goals in two games, keeping two successive clean sheets too. On Tuesday, the Chairboys travel to face Morecambe, who got their first win of the season last weekend at home against Accrington, and Jim Bentley’s side will be looking for back to back victories.

Leyton Orient vs Stevenage

Leyton Orient have began life back in League Two rather well, claiming two consecutive 2-0 victories against Barnet and Dagenham and Redbridge respectively. They’ll be looking for a third win in succession when Teddy Sheringham’s Stevenage visit Brisbane Road, but Boro have only picked up one point from their opening two games.

Crawley Town vs Portsmouth

Portsmouth have made a good start to the season as they look to gain promotion, but recently relegated Crawley are yet to win. Portsmouth have won two on the bounce, whilst the Red Devil’s have only picked up one point, and the south coast club will be a stern test for Mark Yates’s side.

Barnet vs Northampton Town

Northampton have began the season positively, winning twice and keeping two successive clean sheets. The Cobblers travel to Barnet on Tuesday night where the Bees have suffered two successive defeats, so Martin Allen’s side will be looking to get some points on the board.

Hartlepool United vs Newport County

Hartlepool have made a strong start to the season, winning twice from the opening two games. They’ll be looking to make it three on the bounce when an out of form Newport visit Victoria Park. The Exiles lost their opening fixture, and only managed a draw last weekend against Stevenage as Terry Butcher looks for his first win as manager.

AFC Wimbledon vs Cambridge United

Cambridge made a strong start to their season, winning 3-0 against Newport County, before playing out an eight goal thriller last weekend at Carlisle. The point at Brunton Park keeps the U’s unbeaten, but defensive frailties have come to light after shipping four. That said, their opponents AFC Wimbledon will be weary of the U’s attack, having scored seven goals from two games, including four from new striker Barry Corr. The Dons meanwhile lost their opening fixture at Kingsmeadow, but won last weekend.

Accrington Stanley vs Mansfield Town

Mansfield produced a shock on Friday night as the Stags won at Nottinghamshire rivals Notts County. They remain unbeaten after drawing their opening fixture, whilst their opponents, Accrington Stanley, are in search of their first win after a draw and last week’s defeat.

Plymouth Argyle vs Carlisle United

Carlisle were involved in an eight goal thriller last weekend, sharing the spoils with Cambridge, and earned a point the week before against Mansfield. The Cumbrians fans have the daunting journey to Plymouth on a Tuesday evening, but the Pilgrims lost their first home game last weekend, but claimed all three points on the opening day.

Oxford United vs Notts County

Despite impressive performances in their two League games, Oxford United are still in search for their first win. The U’s drew their opening fixture with Crawley, before coming from two goals down to earn a point at Luton last weekend. As for Notts County, they won their opening game at Stevenage, but suffered a defeat in their first home game at the hands of Mansfield. Both sides will be determined to claim all three points.

Luton Town vs Bristol Rovers

Like Oxford, Luton are still in search of their first win after two successive draws. The Hatters managed a late equaliser on the opening day at Accrington, before blowing a two goal lead at home to Oxford last weekend. Their opposition, Bristol Rovers, won last time out on the road at Yeovil, but lost their opening game at home to Northampton.

Dagenham and Redbridge vs Exeter City

Dagenham are in search of their first win after two successive defeats against Portsmouth and Leyton Orient respectively. As for their opponents Exeter, they won their opening game, but got thumped last weekend at Northampton. The concern for both sides heading into this fixture is the number of goals they’ve conceded, as the Daggers have conceded six and the Grecians have let in five.

York City vs Yeovil Town

Yeovil have had a poor return to League Two, losing against Exeter and Bristol Rovers. The Glovers will be desperate for a win, but so will their opponents. York have also lost their opening two games, with Wayne Burnett looking for his first win of the season for the Minstermen.
