Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro has left the Premier League club just six weeks after criticism from manager Jose Mourinho from when she entered the field in the Blue’s opening day 2-2 draw with Swansea City.
The 42 year old, who has been at the club since 2009, had initially downgraded her role after Mourinho claimed his medical staff were “naive” when treating Eden Hazard, who was down and injured with time running out in the game.
The club asked Carneiro to return as the club’s doctor, but instead she has decided to leave and will now pursue legal position, in addition to claims that the Football Association will look into claims surrounding alleged abusive and sexist comments made by Mourinho towards the female.
The incident in question occurred in Chelsea’s opening day draw with Swansea. Both Carneiro and head physio Jon Fearn entered the field to treat Hazard in the closing stages of the match. The result was that Mourinho’s side were reduced to nine men after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had already been dismissed earlier in the game.
The result of Carneiro’s actions led to her being suspended from the bench for the upcoming fixtures, in addition to no longer attending matches or training sessions.
Shortly after the incident, the 42 year old posted a message on social media thanking the public for their support. Despite this, Mourinho maintained his decision to relieve her of her role.
Her next step remains unclear, but the 42 year old has gained quite a reputation in the game in recent years and the likelihood of her being employed at another top European club remains certain.
