French Ligue 1 side Nantes have reportedly agreed a deal with Chelsea to sell their Senegalese defender Papy Djilobodji for a £4 million fee.
The international defender looks set to join the Stamford Bridge side after first choice target John Stones was denied a move from Everton after they rejected the England defender’s transfer request.
Jose Mourinho has sought to tighten up his defensive options after a poor start to the season saw them pick up only four points from the first four games, putting them eight points behind leaders Manchester City.
Djilbodji has played over 160 games for Nantes since his arrival at the club in 2010 and the 26 year old also has 13 caps for his country. The move is seen as a surprise to Chelsea fans who are concerned about their team’s start to the season, with a replacement for the ageing John Terry seemingly at the top of the ‘Special One’s’ list after the side’s poor form.
With Kurt Zouma and Gary Cahill also in contention, Djilobodji will face a tough task of forcing his way into first team reckoning.
