All the highlights from the latest Premier league week. Manchester City maintain their 100% record while shock defeats for Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool in what was a fascinating week in the Premier league.
Newcastle United 0-1 Arsenal
Newcastle entertained Arsenal in the early afternoon kick off with both teams needing a win. Arsenal took the spoils with help from the Toon centre back. The game started off with few chances, Mousa Sissoko was booked early on for a late challenge on Monreal. Mitrovic then saw red for the first time in his Newcastle career for a very late high tackle, there was no hesitating from the ref as he brandished the red card quickly. Theo Walcott should have opened the scoring when he blazed over from just five yards out. The only goal came in the 52nd minute when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fired the ball across goal, finding a deflection off Fabricio Coloccini which spiralled into his own net. This was the second league match in a row where Newcastle United have failed to have a single shot on goal.
Chelsea 1-2 Crystal Palace
This London derby ended in a shock result as Palace went to the bridge and took all three points, this was only Palace’s second victory at Stamford Bridge, in the league. Radamel Falcao did net his first goal for his new club but Palace took the points thanks to Joel Ward and Bakary Sako. The game didn’t see its first attempt until the 19th minute when Pedro fired wide from a tricky angle, Kurt Zouma will feel hard done by to not have a penalty mid-way through the second half when Connor Wickham tugged at centre back’s shirt in the box, preventing the Frenchman to make contact with the incoming corner. Yohan Cabaye had a great chance to open the scoring but could only find Thibaut Courtois from six yards out. Early in the second half Gary Cahill saw his effort cleared off the line by Sako. Down the other end, Bolasie should have put Palace ahead when he mistimed his shot and saw the ball fly over the Chelsea bar. Crystal Palace finally broke the deadlock when the in-form Sako saw his curling effort fly past the despairing dive of Courtois. 14 minutes later and Chelsea were back on level terms, a beautifully weighted ball from Pedro down the right hand side was met with a smart effort from Falcao and beat Alex McCarthy. Chelsea were only level for two minutes when Palace broke and Ward found the net from a close range header.
Liverpool 0-3 West Ham United
West Ham took all three points back to London in what was one of their most historic victories against the reds. Goals from Manuel Lazini, Mark Noble and Diafra Sakho ensured that West Ham would be leaving a very happy team. It only took West ham three minutes to beat the Liverpool defence, a defence that had kept three clean sheets prior to this match. Aaron Cresswell crossing for Lazini to delicately slot home. While the score was at 1-0 Liverpool almost levelled things, new boy Roberto Firmino saw his 25 yard strike cannon off the post. In the 29th minute Dejan Lovren gave the ball away very cheaply which led to the Hammers second goal. Noble slotting home calmly from the edge of the box. Philippe Coutinho picked up a yellow card for not standing 10 yards from a free kick, a very silly booking that would cost dearly in the second half. He picked up his second booking when he lunged in on Dimitri Payet. Then came a moment of huge controversy, Kevin Friend blew his whistle for a foul on Noble, but Noble went in to challenge Danny Ings for the ball, the ball was won cleanly and studs were firmly on the ground, but Friend dished out a straight red to Noble and he was given his marching orders. Sakho confirmed the points for the Hammers in stoppage time when he beat Simon Mignolet from the edge of the box.
Manchester City 2-0 Watford
Manchester City entertained a newly promoted Watford team who was looking to record their second league win of the season. Goals from Raheem Sterling and Fernandinho confirmed that all three points were the hosts. The game started with a slow tempo, City dominating all the possession but not having as many attempts as some would think. Sagna saw his 27th minute strike straight at Heurelho Gomes. Sterling then had a good chance to open the scoring early on but once again Gomes kept the Englishman well out. Two minutes into the second half and the game’s first goal came , Sterling got between the two Watford centre half’s and managed a toe poke past Gomes. Nine minutes later and City had doubled their lead, Fernandinho managed to find the net from a very tight angle, thanks to a clever ball from David Silva. Manchester City should have had their third in the 75th minute after a passage of great passing play from the team offered Yaya Toure the chance to make it three but he could only fire wide.
Aston Villa 2-2 Sunderland
Sunderland travelled to the Midlands where they took on Aston Villa, the away side were looking for their first win of the campaign. Two goals each saw the points shared on the day with, Scott Sinclair getting a double for Villa, with M’vila and Jermain Lens netting for the visitors. M’vila saw his cracking free kick from 25 yards fire home in the 8th minute to open the scoring. Three minutes later and it was all level, Cattermore bringing Sinclair down the area for the Englishman to step up, keep his calm and level the proceedings. Four minutes before half time and Sinclair put the home team ahead with a simple tap in from 6 yards, Jordan Amavi with a beautifully weighted ball in. In the 52nd minute Sunderland were level thanks to Lens, his deflected shot beat the wrong footed Brad Guzan. Richards should have put Villa back ahead when he saw his effort from three yards out fly off his hip and over the bar. Costel Pantilmon assured that Sunderland would be leaving with a point when his smart save kept out Ashley Westwood late on.
