Proving your critics wrong is one thing, but to do it against your rivals in their own backyard whilst knocking them out the League Cup is another!
That’s exactly what Mathieu Flamini did on Wednesday night as Arsenal ran out 2-1 winners at White Hart Lane with both goals coming from the Frenchman.
A simple tap-in from the 31-year-old opened his account after Oxlade-Chamberlain’s shot was only parried away by the Spurs keeper. Chamber’s was unlucky to put Tottenham ahead through an own goal before Flamini scored a perfectly timed volley in the 78th minute to seal the win.
Many Arsenal fans would’ve probably put their money on another player being the knight in shining armour for the Gunners in the North London Derby – a match which could’ve gone both ways considering some of the struggles both teams have had so far this season.
However, Flamini silenced his critics after constantly being put under pressure by the media and even fans for his mediocre performances. Speaking to Arsenal.com after the match he stated, “I have heard many things in the press, many people have been talking about me but I have proved everyone wrong. I’ve been working hard and I was ready for the game.”
His two goals means that he is now joint top scorer for Arsenal along with Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud.
Arsenal will now advance into the 4th round of the League Cup with Sheffield Wednesday awaiting them after they beat Newcastle United. The match will take place on 27th October at Hillsborough.
