The 5 Most Iconic Germans in Premier League History

Like the great Jay Gatsby hosting a party, Mesut Ozil waltzed between his uncomfortable guests at the Emirates yesterday as he dizzied Bastian Schweinsteiger with his nimble movement.

After Ozil lead his German compatriot a merry dance, The Sports Lowdown looks at five of the best German footballers in Premier League history.

Hiztlsperger was the footballing equivalent of a gong; his right foot frame only served to steady his left foot mallet as it delivered thumping goal strikes. After four years at the club, the midfielder left Aston Villa as a fan favourite, having scored eight goals in 99 appearances.

Hiztlsperger played a huge role in Villa’s sixth place finish of the 2003/2004 campaign, an agonising five points off a Champions League spot in one of Villa’s best seasons in the Premier League. For his long-range shots, Hiztlsperger was nicknamed Der Hammer, sealing his place as one of the Premier League’s most memorable German footballers.
