The Gunners were stunned by a relentless Sheffield Wednesday side in the Capital One Cup. Not only that, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade – Chamberlain picked up injuries which could impact their Premier League form with midfielders Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere already side lined.
It was all smiles from Arsene Wenger as the final whistle sounded, which may give an indication as to how seriously the Frenchman takes the league cup. However he must be disappointed with the lack of leadership his experienced players displayed. Mertesacker who captained the side was appalling. For someone who has played over 100 times for Germany and has won the World Cup, you would expect more when playing a Championship side.
Despite the poor performances from Arsenal’s players, Wednesday’s players were fantastic. They showed the hunger and desire that this Arsenal team lack, and they were rewarded for their efforts. With just 27% possession they were able to contain and break down Arsenal with ease.
Ross Wallace opened the scoring with a well hit left footed shot from the edge of the box, Arsenal were slow to react to the short corner which cost them dearly. Just over ten minutes later, Arsenal were caught out by yet another set piece. Ross Wallace’s free kick was headed home by Lucas Joao to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
Sheffield Wednesday went into the half time break with a well deserved 2-0 lead.
Five minutes after the restart Arsenal were punished once again. Their failure to clear another set piece gave Sam Hutchinson a tap in which ended the Gunners’ hopes of a come back. The home fans would have been delighted with the passion their players displayed, meanwhile the Arsenal fans will be sat there wondering why their side never seem to learn from their mistakes.
Although the defeat may not mean much, the injuries to Walcott and Chamberlain could have a dramatic effect on Arsenal’s title ambitions. Walcott has been instrumental when playing in the central role for the Gunners and Alex Oxlade – Chamberlain is the only clear replacement for Aaron Ramsey on the right wing. Swansea away is Arsenal’s next fixture, and Arsenal cannot afford to slip up if the Premier League title is their priority. The Gunners have a poor record against the Welsh side. They lost both fixtures last season, but will be hoping they can continue their excellent Premier League form this season and pick up a victory.
