Sam Burgess is thought to be considering a return to Rugby League just weeks after featuring in an England side that was eliminated at the group stage at the Rugby Union World Cup.
Burgess was criticised for his performances in the England side, although many have come out and defended Burgess. Burgess was given little time in an England shirt before his appearances at the World Cup and it came as a surprise to many when he was included in the squad.
If Burgess does decided to return to League, it is thought that the Leeds Rhinos would be his most likely destination, although Wigan and a move to Australia have also been touted as possible destinations.
Burgess’ current club Bath recently stated that they are confident he will stay at the club, but that has not stopped speculation that the 26-year-old will switch codes for the second time in eighteen months.
And his former coach, Steve McNamara stoked the rom ours by saying it was only a matter of time before Burgess did return to Rugby League.
While Burgess has endured a difficult World Cup, it is worth remembering he has only been playing Union for little over a year and his time in an England shirt may well come again. If he can put in some good performances for Bath then he could find himself back in the England squad come the Six Nations.
However, if Burgess decided that he would prefer a return to League then Super League champions Leeds would certainly be a good fit.
While there doesn’t seem to have been any decision made by Burgess on his long term future, it would still be something of a shock if he does turn his back on Union after such a short spell in the sport.
