Chelsea ladies have progressed to the last 16 of their maiden Champions League after beating Glasgow City 4-0 on aggregate.
The double winners headed to Glasgow with a one goal advantage from the first leg, and the WSL champions began strongly in this match.
It didn’t take long as in-form striker Eniola Aluko produced a moment of magic to give the Blues the lead. The forward cut in from the left before unleashing a fierce shot into the top corner, doubling Chelsea’s aggregate advantage.
City began to create a couple of opportunities as the hosts looked to reduce the deficit, but substitute Claire Shine saw her effort parried by Chelsea keeper Hedvig Lindahl.
The Scottish side would go on to regret that missed opportunity as Chelsea headed up the other end of the field before Fran Kirby, who scored the games only goal in the first leg, shot from distance, beating City keeper Alexander who was unaware of the effort.
Shortly after, Chelsea added a third when Gilly Flaherty headed in what proved to be the decisive blow.
By now, the Blues were rampant, and both Aluko and Davison could easily have punished to hosts further, but neither were able to find a way past Alexander.
So Chelsea have began their maiden Champions League season positively as the WSL and FA Cup champions look to progress further in the competition, and await Monday’s draw as the only British side left in the competition after Liverpool’s defeat to Brescia.
As for City, they will now focus their attention on their domestic campaign as they remain on course four their fourth successive domestic treble.
