An under the weather Adrian Lewis was dumped out of the World Grand Prix in Dublin by Mark Webster on Tuesday night at the Citywest as Michael van Gerwen secured his place in the quarter-finals. How is how Tuesday night’s action unfolded.
Michael Smith looked set to secure a solid win over Jamie Lewis when he took a two set lead over the Welshman, but Lewis hit back to take out 95 and move back to within one set of ‘BullyBoy’ ay 2-1. He proceeded to take the fourth set 3-1 with authority and took the match to a last-set decider.
Both players missed multiple darts at double in the first two legs of the decider, Smith taking the opening leg after Lewis missed three arrows for the leg, but the Welshman hit straight back after Smith missed two at double. The St. Helens ace forced a decider in the final set in which Lewis superbly took out 108 on D16 for a spectacular win.
Dave Chisnall and Jelle Klaasen went toe-to-toe in the next match, and it was the Premier League semi-finalist that drew first blood, taking the first set 3-2 after Klaasen missed a dart for the set in the decider. The Dutchman took out a couple of combination finishes including 129 on his way to taking the second set to level up the match.
Klaasen’s fantastic finishing continued as he nailed finishes of 97 and 134 in set three to take a 2-1 sets lead over Chisnall. However, ‘Chizzy’ came back to level up the match again at 2-2 following a last-leg decider in set four. However, it was Klaasen who booked his place in the last eight with a last-set victory over Chisnall.
Michael van Gerwen was the next man through to the quarter-finals following a 3-1 set victory over Kim Huybrechts. The Belgian got off to the best of possible starts, taking the first set 3-1 against the Dutchman. However, van Gerwen hit back in the second set, levelling the match in a last-leg decider, taking the set 3-2.
After missing darts at double in the first leg, van Gerwen produced a stunning 160 checkout to level up the third set before hitting D16 with his last dart in hand before taking a 2-1 sets lead. The World Number One secured victory in the fourth set
Mark Webster rounded off the evening’s action with a straight sets win over Adrian Lewis, who by all accounts was suffering with a cold when he took to the stage. ‘Webby’ took the first set 3-0 with ease, and proceeded another solid set to move one away from victory.
He started the third set well and with Lewis struggling, it was only a matter of time before the Welshman secured victory and booked his place in the quarter-finals of the Grand Prix.
