A common saying among aircraft manufacturers and pilots is: “For an aircraft to fly well, it must be beautiful”. While this isn’t always applicable when it comes to F1, the sheer genius of a car designer can make an F1 chassis not only win races and titles but also be remembered by fans for decades just for its looks, even if the car itself wasn’t particularly successful.
Formula 1 has seen a plethora of truly striking cars racing through the years, but only a select few can be considered aesthetic masterpieces. Some of them won races, some were dominating the sport whilst others, on the other hand, were struggling to score score points but were still regularly catching fans’ eyes due to their sleek shapes and beautiful liveries. Arguably, cars from certain eras looked better than others.
The late 80’s and early 90’s period, for example, is regarded as the golden era of F1 car designs by the average F1 fan. However, cars from as early as the 60’s and the 70’s still enjoy a healthy degree of popularity amongst enthusiasts and some of the more recent designs can also be seen featuring on lists of the prettiest Formula 1 cars ever.
Obviously, it should be noted that the following ranking is purely subjective, as beauty is something that each of us understands differently. If you think a certain car is absent or should be lower or higher on the list, feel free to include your own top 10 in the comments. Enjoy!
