With the 2015 Formula One season drawing to a close, teams and drivers begin to slowly look ahead to 2016, as they aim to dethrone Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes at the top. It has been another incredible year for The Silver Arrows, as they retained their grip on the Constructor’s Championship, despite stronger competition from Ferrari. Their lead driver, too, has been in imperious fashion, as he has all but romped to the title in unerring fashion in what could well be a record breaking season for the Englishman. With Hamilton having practically won his third World Championship (which he will hope to win in Austin), we ask whether he is the greatest driver of his generation?
Despite the ongoing feeling that the sport is in decline, the quality of the drivers on the grid is as good, if not better, than it has ever been before. Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso have a combined total of 9 world titles (if we include Hamilton’s all-but certain third title) and are the undoubted stars of their generation. The trio would be in most people’s top 15 of all time, and perhaps even higher, but which one is the best?
Sports writer and Formula One lead writer and editor, Dan Culyer, offers his insight into the three drivers, and will judge them on several categories, in an attempt to decipher an order.
