Liverpool looked to stamp their authority on the game quickly and it wasn’t long before English side created their first real opening. Roberto Firmino worked some space on the edge of the area before he slipped in James Milner but his shot could only hit the bar.
Liverpool despite having complete control of the game failed to create any further clear cut chances. This was until the stroke of half time, Jordan Ibe with a neat piece of play which led to his shot ricocheting around the Rubin penalty area forcing goalkeeper Sergey Ryzhikov into a smart double save.
The second half started in much the same manner, and it wasn’t long before Liverpool got the goal they deserved. Ibe recieved the ball from Firmino deep in Rubin’s half and drove towards goal before he slotted the ball into the corner from 18 yards.
It was Ibe who then came closest to adding a second shortly after following a swift counter attack, but his shot was well saved by the feet of Ryzhikov.
Rubin did try and stamp their own authority on the game, but were constantly thwarted by a solid looking Liverpool defense, led by Mamadou Sakho.
Neither keeper was troubled as the game came to an uneventful end, Ibe yet again having the best chance to double his sides lead but he dragged his shot wide on his weaker left foot.
The result will be a pleasing one for Reds boss Jurgen Klopp as it keeps qualification to the knockout stages firmly in his sides own hands. Liverpool will face FC Bordeaux at Anfield on match day five in three weeks time.
