Russell Knox emerged as the surprise winner of the WGC HSBC Champions event in Shanghai, and in the process became the first Scotsman to win a WGC event.
Knox held his nerve in his final round, shooting a score of four-under-par, to finish the tournament on 20-under-par. This left him two shots clear of American Kevin Kisner and three shots clear of English pair Ross Fisher and Danny Willet.
Willet had a fantastic final round, going round the course in just 62 shots. However, he fell just short and had to settle for a tie for third. Willett has been in impressive form all year and now looks like he could end up playing at The Ryder Cup next year.
Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy both finished in the top ten but neither were able to get close enough to the leaders to make a real challenge. Spieth finished the tournament on 15-under-par with McIlroy on 14-under-par.
With several big names being in the field, few would have predicted the eventual winner. The 30-year-old’s success was his first on the PGA Tour, and he will be hoping to follow up his success with more victories in the coming months. He joins an impressive list of past champions which includes Bubba Watson, Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia.
