The current Manchester United squad seems to be lacking the attacking excitement in which the Manchester United fans are used to. Under Sir Alex Ferguson, the United faithful witnessed free flowing attacking football on a weekly basis. However under Dutchman Louis Van Gaal it has been quite the opposite. United fans have complained about the quality of the attacking play under Van Gaal and are suggesting it is “boring”. Could Ronaldo be the man to change this?
The Portuguese winger spent six years at United scoring 84 Premier League goals, as well as winning three league titles. During his United career he developed into one of the world’s most talented footballers, and this was recognised by football fans all around the world.
He joined United from Sporting Lisbon for a fee of £12.2 million after playing against United in a friendly. According to Sir Alex Ferguson the United players couldn’t stop talking about Ronaldo on the plane back, and urged him to sign him. Six years later, Ronaldo would sign for Real Madrid for a world record fee of £80 million to take is career to the next level.
Although Ronaldo has enjoyed a hugely successful spell in Spain, there are now question marks over his future at Madrid, and many are suggesting the player would favour a return to Old Trafford.
At the age of 30, would signing Ronaldo be a slight gamble? Considering it would take a monumental fee to convince Real Madrid to sell the player. Of course there’s no doubt that Ronaldo is up there with Messi as the best players in the world, however how much longer can Ronaldo perform at this level?
United look as though they will fall short of the title this season and will need additions in the summer for next season, and I’m sure the man all United fans will be hoping for is Cristiano Ronaldo. There is a sense of unfinished business with United and Ronaldo, in what would be the perfect fairy-tale ending for both.
United’s attack would undoubtedly improve with the addition of the winger. The once lethal partnership of Rooney and Ronaldo would be reunited with the likes of Martial and Mata alongside them. This could be the answer to United’s problems…a very expensive answer for that matter. Would they be willing to spend big on a 30 year old?
The only doubt behind this move would be whether Ronaldo would want to risk ruining his legacy at United. He is still adored by the fans, but the expectations would be extremely high, and as they say “never go back”.
