The two title favourites meet at last in what is expected to be an enthralling encounter at the Emirates stadium. City are currently one point behind Arsenal, and will be looking to pick up all three points to move up to second place. Whilst the Gunners will be looking to reduce the five point gap between themselves and Leicester City.
Arsenal are unbeaten in their last four meetings with Manchester City, which is a surprisingly good record for a side who struggles against the top teams. Most recently, Arsenal beat Manchester City 2-0 away from home, in what was a perfectly executed away performance. The Gunners were tight and compact at the back, and were clinical in taking their chances. However, will the Gunners be able to replicate that performance with their current injuries?
The Gunners will of course be without defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin, who was instrumental in the 2-0 victory over Manchester City last season. The Frenchman offers superb protection for the back four, and his absence could impact Arsenal’s chances of winning the game. Arsene Wenger will be hoping the midfield pivot of Ramsey and Flamini can give the protection required to keep City at bay. Although, Aaron Ramsey has been criticised for his lack of discipline when playing centrally. Is this a weakness that Manuel Pellegrini can look to exploit?
City have also had their fair share of injuries. Kompany, Silva and Aguero have all suffered from injuries this season, arguably their three most important players. Despite Aguero and Silva returning, Kompany’s presence will be missed massively. Without the Belgian at the heart of the defence, City struggle to remain organised when under pressure. Something that Arsenal could take advantage of with the pace and quality they have in attack.
Although this isn’t a title deciding game, the winner will most certainly have the edge in the race for top spot. Arguably the favourites are Arsenal due to their form ahead of the game, nonetheless you cannot overlook the quality City possess.
