Leicester are the side who currently occupy top spot in the Barclays Premier League, who have just recently beaten current champions Chelsea. However, Arsenal who sit two points behind Leicester, are looking as though they could be serious title contenders at last. With the inconsistent performances from the other top clubs, is this Arsenal’s best opportunity to win the league?
Despite the current injury crisis, the Gunners still look deadly going forward, and will most certainly give Manchester City a run for their money come Monday. The likes of Olivier Giroud, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey are all bang in form, and have the quality to break down any defence in the league.
Arsenal’s most recent victory came last weekend, as they beat Aston Villa 2-0 away from home. Although there were some nervy moments at the back, it was an assured performance from the Gunners. The type of performance you would expect to see from a side challenging for the title. Nonetheless, the real test will come on Monday, as they face Manchester City at the Emirates. Arsene Wenger is of course without his midfield brute Francis Coquelin, who performed spectacularly well in Arsenal’s victory over City last season. Mathieu Flamini has been holding the fort for the time being, but can he be effective against high quality opposition?
It is the big games in which Arsenal will be judged on whether they are good enough to win the title. With their fully fit squad, they are certainly one of the best sides in the country. However, when the injuries strike, do they have the viable back up to cope with the long term injuries?
The January transfer window is almost upon us, and many Arsenal fans will be pleading their manager for reinforcements. Particularly in midfield. With Coquelin out until at least February, and Cazorla out until March, Wenger may be forced to spend.
If the Gunners were to add a central midfielder to their ranks, they might just be favourites to go on and win the Premier League. With the defensive stability at the back in Cech and Koscienly, and the attacking prowess in Ozil and Sanchez. Arsenal may finally have enough to go all the way this season.
There is of course a long way to go yet, and Arsenal have been in this position many times before. However, there haven’t been many seasons where the top teams have been so inconsistent in their performances in recent years.
Can Arsenal win their first league title since 2004?
