Anthony Joshua has won his heavyweight bout against Dillian Whyte to claim the British Heavyweight title. The 26 year old was tested at times by Whyte, but in the end he proved too strong for his opponent.
Whyte had previously inflicted a defeat on Joshua when the pair were amateurs, but it was Joshua who went into the fight as th hot favourite. The Olympic Champion had won his previous fourteen professional fights by knockout, and few were predicting an upset going into the fight.
In he early rounds, Whyte seemed to take his opponent by surprise and landed several early blows on Joshua. However, the man tipped to become World Champion one day kept his conpusure and fought back to take control of the fight. The fight was ended in the seventh round, with the referee deciding to bring proceedings to a halt with Whyte looking unstable. Joshua had never been taken beyond the fourth round and although Whyte suffered defeat he can be proud of his performance.
For Joshua, a fight against David Haye has been muted, although nothing has yet been confirmed. Joshua may have another Brit, Derek Chisora in his sights, after the controversial fighter secured a win on the undercard on his return to boxing. Despite having only appeared in the ring fifthteen times, it is clear Joshua is an exceptional talent it might not be long until he catches the attention of newly crowned heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.
