I can scarcely remember a Premier League season that has been so unpredictable, exciting and competitive as the one we are enjoying right now. Despite the season not being at the half way stage yet, the first four and a bit months have thrown up more surprises than we could ever have imagined, with Leicester’s meteoric rise from strugglers to leaders; and Champions Chelsea’s epic demise being just two highlights of a truly fascinating season.
It was only in May that Jose Mourinho and Chelsea stood at the pinnacle of English football, as they romped to the league title in unerring fashion. Hailed as potentially Chelsea’s greatest ever team, Mourinho and his team seemed to have the world at their feet as they enjoyed one of their most successful and dominant seasons in their history. Scarcely 7 months later though, and Chelsea sit a mere three points above the relegation zone – yes, you heard right – in a lowly 15th place, and with Jose Mourinho having been axed on Wednesday, this current Chelsea team is practically unrecognisable from the team that lit up the league last season. So what has happened at the champions?
Here at The Sports Lowdown, our lead football writer and senior editor Dan Culyer, takes a closer look at the situation at Stamford Bridge, and attempts to decipher the reasons behind their struggling form and will assess just how much work needs to be done to recapture last season’s form.
